[FAO] Celebrity Samaritans

Charity doesn't always have to be behind closed doors. The desire to help others is a noble feeling and when it's a celebrity who is extending a helping hand; it draws huge attention from millions around the world. Few days ago, Hollywood sensation Lindsay Lohan visited Kolkata to shoot a BBC documentary on child trafficking. Lindsay is one among such good-hearted celebrities who lend their heart and hand to fellow human beings. Let's take a look at the other 'Celebrity Samaritans'

Reports say LiLo was moved to tears when she listened to the plight of a 12-year-old girl at a shelter home who had been rescued by the police . LiLo even expressed her desire to remain in touch with the girl. The "Mean Girl" star has always been in the news for the wrong reasons - drugs, drunken driving, fight with girlfriend Samantha - her antics complemented her 'mean girl' status. In fact the whole world was taken by surprise when they learnt about her good deeds. The charity works of Angelina Jolie can't be confined to a few lines. This UN Goodwill Ambassador has done consistently tried to highlight the plight of refugees around the world. Being born to a Hollywood family, Angie never witnessed real poverty until she came to Cambodia for the shooting of 'Lara Croft'. What she witnessed there transformed her life itself. She always finds time for charity despite her busy schedule. Together with Brad Pitt, she has donated millions for charity. Unlike many celebs, she is actively participates in field work, taking it to a more political level. Jolie has also adopted three little kids from impoverished countries, providing them a new hope and life.

Pop diva Madonna can be compared to Angelina Jolie when it comes to charity. Like Angie, lady Madge too has been actively involved in humanitarian works in the African continent. She adopted a boy named David Banda and a girl named Mercy from Malawi. Madonna also runs a charitable trust named 'Raising Malawi', the helps feed, educate and provide medical care for Malawi's orphans. Her toyboy lover Jesus Luz too is into charity. Whatever his motive, his donations for charity will benefit the needy.

She was named 'Ambassador against Hunger' for the United Nations World Food Programme for which she had donated $1 million. There is one famous poster of her distributing food to children that says "My dream is that no child should go to school hungry". As Drew has got a huge fan following, her kind gesture is generating a buzz around the world.

She was even associated with 'Soles4Souls', an international shoe charity dedicated to providing a free pair of shoes to people in need. She visited Rwanda to support charity works for the uplift of women and children. Scarlett says she felt more human and real as she interacted with those poor women there... something really different from the pseudo world of Hollywood.

George Clooney

He is actively involved in resolving the Darfur crisis for which he was listed among TIME magazine's 100 most influential people of the world. He and his father travelled to Darfur and filmed a documentary, "A Journey to Darfur", highlighting the plight of the people there. For his humanitarian activities, he was awarded Summit Peace Award by the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. Though he wasn't able to eliminate the crisis of Darfur, his efforts have indeed helped a lot to ease the situation there.

He has raised millions for the betterment of the poor and downtrodden people around the world. Bono is often regarded as a messenger of peace who campaigns for third-world debt relief and against embargoes. Product Red is an initiative by Bono to raise money to fight AIDS. Bono and his wife Ali Hewson, together with designer Rogan Gregory has launched a fashion line EDUN which focuses on investing in African nations, thereby providing employment opportunities for the poor. He was nominated for Nobel Peace prize three times.

Salman has been actively involved with Make-A-Wish Foundation which deals with terminally ill children.
