Making a relationship work does take a lot of effort. Yes, if you're in love with your partner, things do get a lot easier. Even so, you have to put in a lot of time and energy into your relationship to keep it on solid ground. In the face of work pressures and everyday stresses of life, even the most lovey-dovey of all couples can find themselves on shaky ground as far as their relationships go. So is it any wonder that our Bollywood stars too have a tough time maintaining their relationships? The constant media focus into their personal lives, alleged link ups with co-stars, not being able to stay connected because of hectic film schedules - are all these factors the reason why so many breakups abound in Bollywood? Whatever the reason, over the years we have seen many high profile Bollywood breakups, some of which have literally been shocking and some highly predictable! Some couples maintained a dignified silence and let the gossip after their breakup die a natural death, whereas some couples used the media to air their dirty linen and perhaps get their partners off their backs! 1. Karisma Kapoor - Abhishek Bachchan: Amitabh's 60th birthday saw Karisma being introduced as the soon-to-be Bachchan bahu . No sooner had the announcement been made, than it was followed by news that the couple had split. Why that happened no one knows, but reports were that mum Jaya was not too happy with the alliance. 2. Shahid Kapur - Kareena Kapoor: A coincidence that the Kapoor sisters feature in the top 2 breakups of recent times! The couple was going strong for three long years and suddenly Kareena was spot in Saif's arms. There were reports that it was some kind of publicity stunt for Tashan , but Saif's tattoo cleared the air! Aishwarya Rai - Vivek Oberoi: Although Aishwarya never admitted in public that she and Vivek were a couple, he being at her side constantly when she was admitted to the hospital due to an injury told another story altogether. When asked by a reporter about Vivek, Ash replied ''Que sera sera ''. Evidently their breakup is what was meant to be. 4. Akshay Kumar - Raveena Tandon: Just as their relationship got headlines in the paper, similarly their breakup made waves too. This was one of those ugly splits. Lots of news about their breakup, enormous bad press from both parties coupled with a lot of emotion ensured fodder for the gossip mills for months on end 5. Salman Khan - Aishwarya Rai: Their romance was at its peak during the making of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and what a romance it was! If ever there was any doubt that our filmi potboilers are inspired from real life, this couple's love saga removed all those doubts. There were even reports of Salman having hit Ash. Saif Ali Khan - Rosa: Even more shocking than Saif splitting with his wife Amrita was the news of his breakup with Italian beauty Rosa. Rosa was often seen in the company of Saif's kids and rumour had it that the two were even married, which is why their breakup came as quite a surprise to everyone in the industry and out. 7. Dino Morea - Bipasha Basu: What might have started off as a publicity stunt for a Mahesh Bhatt film, soon turned into reality when Bipasha Basu split with her long time boyfriend Dino. Their Raaz went on to be a super hit but that too could not save their relationship from going kaput. Bips moved on to greener pastures - hottie beau John Abraham. Another scandalous breakup followed thereafter. Just when it seemed that all that was a thing of the past, Shilpa's recent win on Big Brother raked up the entire mess once again, this time in British tabloids! However, dignified responses by both sides squashed the rumour mills this time around. 9. Deepika Padukone - Yuvraj Singh: Friends and family of the couple said that Deepika and Yuvraj were happening - BIG TIME! What fuelled this fire was when Deepika was spotted at a few of the matches of the Indian cricket team. Then it was said that Deepika is seeing Dhoni and not Yuvi. Mahima Chowdhary - Leander Paes: Mahima was seen at Leander's side through most of his tennis matches, whereas he went out of his way to support her dying career as best as he could. She was even at his bedside when he was sick and nursed him back to health as a loving partner would. No one knows exactly what happened here, but the couple split and went their separate ways. Both Mahima and Leander then went on to get married - just not to each other! 11. Lara Dutta - Kelly Dorji: This was one of the saddest splits in Bollywood between a gorgeous couple who had been together for over 8 years! They had even been living together for more than 3 years and were often described as one of the steadiest couples in Bollywood, which is why the news of their split was that much more shocking! 12. Neelam - Bobby Deol: After being madly in love with one another and going steady for over two years, one day Bobby suddenly called it off with Neelam. Apparently his family did not want an actress-bahu for their laadla , but the real reason was another pretty actress called Pooja Bhatt! Pooja soon dumped Bobby and he got a bitter taste of his own medicine. 13. Raj - Nargis: The Raj Kapoor and Nargis pair was great for Indian cinema, largely due to the fact that the two were hopelessly in love with one another. Till it lasted, it was touted as the greatest romance of the times. Sridevi - Mithun: Mithun and Sridevi had a passionate romance in the 80s, at a time when Mithun was already married to Yogita Bali. There were also reports that the two had a secret marriage! However, fame and success beckoned and Sridevi dumped Mithun who then went back to his wife. 15. Amitabh - Rekha: Perhaps the greatest mystery of all time? No one really knows if this famous Bollywood couple was actually a couple in real life or not. Their hit movie Silsila is allegedly inspired from the real life triangle involving Amitabh - Rekha - Jaya.
