A laptop for Rs 500
HERALD CORRESPONDENT
NEW DELHI, JAN 30
Move over Nicholas Negroponte; Indian scientists have developed the prototype of a $10 laptop (Rs 500) with 2 GB RAM! The little wonder will be on display in Tirupati on 3 February, at the launch of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology.
The $10 laptop project is India's answer to the $100 laptop of Massachussets Institute of Technology's (MIT) Nicholas Negroponte, who was trying to hard sell the project to India. The $10 laptop has been developed by students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and IIT Madras, with public sector undertakings like the Semiconductor Complex.
"At this stage, the price is $20, but with mass production it is bound to come down," Secretary for Higher Education R P Agarwal said. The main reason for the Human Resource Development Ministry's resistance to Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project was its hidden costs, that made the actual cost of the laptop $200.
